   Awarded the Golden Medal for Civic Merits by the President of the Italian Republic

"Excellent example of  high civic duty and responsibility, deserving respect and admiration by the whole nation….for having so efficiently completed reconstruction after the 1976 earthquake"                                  

…and now let us draw your attention to a village called Moggio Udinese- Muec’ in the Friulian language. We wish to tell you something about its history, its charm…  the monastic nuns that  have specifically chosen to live here,  the mysteries and legends that surround this small town, located in Alto Friuli (High Friuli) where the Alps rise up in all their splendour.

… Count Cacellino, a nobleman  from Carinthia and a high ranking lord at the Court of Emperor Henry IV, was the liege lord of Moggio and its territory.

Written records dating back to 1084 actually point to the existence of a castle here, which  is said to have stood north of the actual village, on top of an overlooking hill which later collapsed.

The feudal territory of Moggio was subsequently donated to the Patriarch of Aquileia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bishops_and_Patriarchs_of_Aquileia) and an abbey took the place of the former feudal Castle and from then on it was the the Abbey and its Abbots who shaped the history of Moggio with  its territory and people.

In the years 1326-1349 the Abbey reached its maximum prosperity, extending its power from Carinthia to most of the Friulian territory.

In 1420 the Abbey fell under the rule of the Republic of Venice.

In 1466 Pietro Bardo from Venice was appointed Abbot of Moggio, he later was elected Pope Paul II in Rome.

Saint Carlo Borromeo was Abbot of Moggio from 1561 al 1566.

Nowadays Moggio still retains its distinctive charm and beauty echoing its past splendours.

“A heavenly breeze blows in Muec’- Moggio Udinese”

The Monastery of St. Gallus – now home to the monastic nuns ‘Clarisse’ – has been brought back to its original role and reopened in December 1987. As many as eight centuries have passed since 9^th June 1119 when the Abbey was first consecrated under Patriarch Voldaric I , now its ancient role as a spiritual centre has been once again restablished.

The Clarisse nuns live in deep silence, discovering day after day the beauty of leadinf a life of poverty and brotherhood, steeped in praise and perfect joy.

Reflections and curiosities

- Evangelical poverty means that Man is free from earthly things, “being” is distinct from “having” and Man counts for what he is and not for what he has.

- The main occupation of the Clarisse is to pray and to worship

- The Clarisse have chosen not to possess,  not to have …

- The Abbess prays God for three calls (vocations) a year…her prayers have always been answered !

- The nun at the Entrance gate let you in  you  saying :”Peace and Good be with you, what can I do  for you ?”

- You may happen to meet a Clarissa nodding with a smile at you

- It can happen, when you are there in the monastery, to feel uncertain: why have I come here? How can I tell them that I would like to talk and know about them, young women who have chosen Heaven while living in worldly Earth. But soon after, everything comes natural, we talk and talk…and feel that special atmosphere….

…..and then reluctantly I left  this land of castles and monasteries,  middle ages and benedictine monks, of dukes and invaders, earthquakes and spirituality…

- there are about thirty nuns now, most of  them in their thirties, all have a high school diploma, some a university degree. 

The Legend

….I was recently talking to a resident of Moggio and he told me that, as a young boy, together with other friends, he used to go and look through all the underground passages, caves and tunnels under the Abbey site, in search of something…

Now some archaeologists have in mind of  inspecting these places…

…Count Cacellino, the Middle Ages, the power of the Abbey… a “secret” and “special” organization perhaps still active …some say there is evidence of all this in Moggio..

…a secret organization belonging to the world of high finance influential politicians and international intellectuals, guardians of mysterious and magic secrets .

The Order of the Temple, or Knights Templar left some traces of a settlement in Moggio; in

The Middle Ages they were among the most famous Western Christian Military Orders,  known as

“Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici” (The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Templar)

Their fortunes, success and mysteries began in the aftermath of the the Crusades when,  by means of bequests, legacies, inheritancies, donations or other gifts from Church authorities as well as from feudal lords, their members managed to acquire and control lands, estates, castles, manors.. to such an extent as to become the most powerful, respected and feared Order in that time. They carefully and meticulously developed their organization throughout Christian Europe, extending it into such fields as Finance, Banking, Politics….
